This region is the most economically backward in the world. It is the White man's burden. It comprises nations that depend on handouts from the West. Critical sectors of national life in these nations - Education, Power, Health - are comatose. The quality of life in these countries is very low. Nature has endowed many of these nations with wealth but they can not manage it for their economic benefit. Citizens from these countries are scattered all over the world like sheep without a shepherd. And the pitiable part, it's like the scenario won't get better any time soon. Reason: fake, corrupt and incompetent leadership.
The reason why many Sub-Saharan African countries remain backward long after the exit of the colonialists is because of deceptive, dubious and deceitful people in the corridors of power. The reason why it seems these countries can not govern themselves is because of leaders without clear vision, who accidentally found themselves in power. Many leaders are not making impact or positively affecting the ruled because they are mere puppets who answer to ethnic godfathers and not the electorate. These are leaders who cling to power despite their failure in making any impact or positively affecting the people. Selfish leaders who wine and dine when the citizenry pine and cry. They only offer words and promises but no commensurate action. These are leaders who try to explain away their shameful incompetence and give themselves pass marks when the masses score them zero. They are insensitive to the plight of the people and only play politics with their needs.
Unfortunately, they always have supporters and die-hard followers who sing their praises to the heavens.
Real leaders have the citizenry at the centre of their governance. Real leaders are servants of the people. They empower the people not emasculate them. They are fair, open, sincere and honest. Real leaders keep their words, they have integrity.
How do we get such leaders?
May God give us real leaders to wipe away the shame of Africa, especially the so-called Giant of Africa.
