‘Against The Run Of Play’ Contains Distorted Claims – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised some of the claims in the book ‘Against The Run Of Play’ which was written by the Chairman of Thisday’s Editorial Board, Mr. Segun Adeniyi.

According to Jonathan, the book as presented contains distorted claims on the 2015 presidential election by many of the respondents.

He said that at the right time, the main characters in the elections, including himself, would come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books.

Adeniyi, who is also a former spokesman for the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, had said that the idea for the book sunk in when he decided to research into why it is difficult for incumbent presidents to lose elections in Africa.

The controversial book has attracted criticism and reactions from several quarters, including from the British Government.

One of the claims in the book was that former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, connived with former United States President Barack Obama, among other world leaders, to push him out of office.

But the British Government denied the allegation that it conspired with others to ensure Jonathan’s defeat, in the 2015 general election.

A statement issued by the Press and Public Affairs Officer of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Mr. Joe Abuku, said that President Muhammadu Buhari won the election with the backing of majority of Nigerians.

Britain insisted that the only role it played in the election was the engagement with Nigerians and their leaders prior to the elections to make it non-violent, free and fair.
